Annual Argument on Hats Arrives

Spring Season opens and Spring Hats Must Soon Be Bought.

The Cost is Evenly Divided

Styles in Women’s Hats are Rapidly Conforming with Those Practiced by Men’s Hatters and the Tailored Hat is the Proper Thing.

A season of the year is soon to delight the feminine part of Fort Dodge although it may counteract its effects by the reception it receives among the opposite sex, and the coming season is that of the spring openings in the numerous millinery stores of the city.

Then it is that the annual joke maker will begin to please one sex with the annual jokes about big hats and if he runs out of jokes about the big hats, he will make some up about enormous prices on small ones, so that it is easily to be seen he is hard to satisfy.

In reality if everyone will be honest, they will admit that all the fuss about high priced hats is concocted just for the convenience of the joke man and that although a woman does sometimes spend a good price for a hat she either wears it several seasons or does not have any other during that season.

Times are fast changing and styles in hats are advancing as rapidly as they are in other lines. The tailored hat a few years ago was unknown in the realm of bonnetdom, and no woman now is properly dressed for the street or for church unless she wears one, and any other style in the above named places would be as incongruous as a man wearing an opera hat to his business.

In the average walks of life a man pays nothing less than five dollars for his every day hat and if statistics were obtained it would be found that the women who pay more than that for their street hats are balanced on the other side by the man who pays more than five for his.

Then a man generally buys a straw hat of greater or less price for summer wear, and that corresponds to the dress hat that a woman buys for the garden party, and the evening party or reception and even should the masculine readers of this article contend that the woman’s hat costs more, he must remember that she can take off the plumes and other trimmings and put them away to help out with next year’s hat, and that a man’s hat, once discarded, leaves no trimmings for next years.

When you advance into the more prosperous and wealthy circles prices and numbers of hats, in both masculine and feminine wardrobes, or perhaps it should be wardhats, will increase proportionately.

As we said in the beginning, the spring season is soon to open, the usual creations will be shown and the usual woman will go home with the usual bonnet which she has decided upon after looking longingly at the more expensive one which fit her taste but not her purse, and in the usual way she will try to convince herself that the one she got is much more becoming and appropriate after all.

And just because she can monage (sic) to get a few more pretty trimmings on her hat than the man can on his, pray do not let him get the idea that is it more expensive.

With the closing of this story, it is to a certainty, decided that there can never be any more spring jokes about spring hats, and of course everyone is convinced that the writer is surely a man, and therefore would be fair and honest to give the opposite sex such a gallant service in this much abused argument.

(Editor’s note: One thing I miss about articles in this time period is that there are no bylines. We have no idea who wrote what, and even no record of who the reporters were at this time. I’m inclined to this that this piece was written by a woman, or at least a man with a very close connection (wife, sisters or mother) to the feminine side. The argument for comparing prices and features of hats, with the notion that a woman’s hat has decorations that can be used again, leads me to think that a woman thought it up. I could be wrong, and there is no way to check.)

Etiquette for “Hello” Girls

A Book on “Polite Language” Causes Sensation in Fort Dodge Telephone Circles

Has Been Issued in Chicago

American Telephone Company Unloads Itself of Idea Which is Not Relished Here

 

“I think it’s all a pipe dream,” remarked Charley Demorest, manager of the Iowa Telephone company’s office in this city, as he buttoned up his overcoat, preparatory to braving pneumonia in the chill March breezes. Mr. Demorest was discussing the rumored “Polite Language” book, which has just been issued by the American Telephone company for the use of its toll operators.

“It may be all right,” continued Mr. Demorest, “but it seems to me that a busy man won’t feel any better after he has had all that string of courtesy, that could be condensed into three words, fired at him thru the telephone. For my part, I think that the operators can be polite, without learning a set of declamations.”

The news that a book of stereotyped phrases for the use of telephone operators has been issued, has been receibved with considerable interest here.

The book has been issued in Chicago by the American Telephone company, and will be in use in every city where the long distance telephone is used. The new and polite form of language is being used in the entire east, and the idea has been brought west by S.A. Crawford, the new manager for the company in Chicago, who insists that the new forms of speech must be strictly adhered to by long distance operators.

Here is a sample of what may be expected to transpire in any telephone booth after the arrival of the book of decorum, when a patron asks for connection with Waterloo, for instance:

Patron – Hello! Is this long distance?

Operator -You’re talking to the operator of hte long distance telephone line.

Patron – I want to talk with Main, 4873, Waterloo, Iowa, and hurry up about it.

One minute passes, and the patron becomes impatient. He works the receiver hook vigorously until he gets a responce, and another season of talk begins.

Patrons (sic) – Say, what’s the matter I don’t get that number?

Operator – I will endeavor to ascertain, what is the trouble.

Another delay, and the patron gets really impatient, with the result that he gives the receiver hook another juggling, and begins another appeal to the operator.

Patron – What in the dickens is the matter than I don’t get that number?

Operator – I’m endeavoring to ascertain why you do not secure your connections, and after I have ascertained I will call you. Please hang up the receiver.

If the patron gets frantic and asks the same question of the operator a dozen times he will receive exactly the same answer each time.

The state of mind of the Fort Dodge man who is trying to talk to Waterloo and is compelled to listen to this rigamarole, can best be imagined. It is bad enough to have to talk to Waterloo.

Judging from the general sentiment in the offices here, however, it will be a long time before stereotyped phrases come to Fort Dodge offices.

Accident Occurred Eleven O’clock Saturday Night About Three Miles West of City – Investigation is Being held.

As a result of the parting of a train on the steep Tara Hill, Elmer J. Hedman of this city lies dangerously injured at his home on the West Side while the Illinois Central is the loser by several cars, besides delay to traffic. The accident occurred shortly after ten o’clock Saturday night, tow and three quarters miles west of Fort Dodge, on the reverse curve and at the foot of its steepest portion.

A train composed of sixteen loaded cars and two empties was sent west from Fort Dodge about 10:30 p.m. in charge of night Yardmaster Oscar Rhodes. Engine No. 107 a local yard engine was pulling the train and was in charge of Engineer Bowen and Fireman Hartnett. Engine 170 another yard engine in charge of Engineer Mater was pushing the train.

Yardmaster Rhodes had as his assistants, three members of two yard crews, Foreman Maxwell, and Helpers Hedman and Ashman. Elmer J. Hedman was ordered to go ahead, and ride on the forward engine, while the remainder of the men stayed in the caboose.

The train was made up of cars that were destined for western points, and on account of the congested condition of the local yard, were to be taken out and stored in the Tara yards.

Train Parts at Bridge.

A littel (sic) west of the Des Monies (sic) river bridge, the train broke in two parts. the men on the forward section noticed that the engine handled the train unusually easy. Hedman immediately went out on top of the cars, and discovered the break.

He signaled for the train to stop and after waiting a short time the train proceeded back under caution. Hedman rode on the forward car which was filled with rosin. At a point two and three quarters miles west of Fort Dodge, Hedman noticed the other section coming up the hill, but apparently those men had not discovered the break, for the train was running along a good speed, and without any man on the head car.

Gives Danger Signal.

Herman (sic) quickly hurled his lantern in the air, which is the emergency stop signal, and then dropped flat on the car. Fireman Hartnett saw the signal and the engines were quickly stopped, but not before the crash came.

Hedman says that he knew nothing after he dropped on the car, but he was evidently hurled into the air, and fell on his head in the cinders along the track. The car of rosin being the lightest loaded was the first to break and Hedman was covered with the wreckage, while the rosin covered his body completely.

The crews of the two engines hurried to Hedman’s rescue, but for a half hour not a sign of him could be found. Then the first engine was sent ahead to Tara to give the alarm to prevent the night passenger from crashing into the wreck.

Hedman Missed.

After telegraphing the alarm, the engine again came back to the wreck, but the men had meanwhile found the injured man, or rather he had found them, for he crawled out unaided from the wreck. The men say that the rosin dust blinded and stifled them, while the darkness made their work slower.

Just as the other engine was coming back from Tara the men heard Hedman’s voice, as he was apparently talking to himself. Even then they could not find him, but he managed to drag himself although badly injured from the wrecked cars. The cars were piled high above the track, and four of them were locked into a space not much longer than an ordinary car length.

Injuries Serious.

Hedman was tenderly carried into the caboose, and one engine started back for Fort Dodge. The injured man was taken to his home in the ambulance, and the company physician with assistants was called. It was found that his left hip was dislocated, and the several deep cuts and bruises were on his head.

One cut over an inch in diameter was found in the skull over the left eye. This cut was into the bone, and another one much longer and deeper was in his cheek  under the eye. This cut was also down to the bone.  Another gash was found in his mouth, while still another was found behind his ear. Every wound was filed (sic) with cinders and rosin.

The danger from these foreign substances in the wounds in (sic) great. The cuts will leave deep scars and disfigure him. both eyes are injured, the left being closed completely, while the right can just be opened. It is not thought that the sigh of either eye will be impaired.

Internal Injuries Feared.

It was at first feared that internal injures might develop, but as his pulse and temperature are yet good, it is hoped that he had not suffered any. his injures are serious, yet not necessary (sic) fatal.

Hedman until a few months ago was chief clerk in the freight office, but resigned this position to take the work of switchman in order to have an out door life. During this time, the man has been injured twice.

Hedman is a young man and one of the best known railroad men on this line. He is well liked by everyone, and the news of his injury has caused much sorrow. He was captain of the railroad baseball team, and was an indoor player of ability, and so is known to many outside of the railroads.

“The Wreck Conditions.”

As soon as Hedman had been taken to his home, the switch engine with a wrecking crew was sent back to the accident. The crew worked all night, and at last shoved the cars from the rails. At 5:20 the line was clear again, and the midnight trains on the M. &St. L., and the Central were let by also the morning trains.

Soon after the wrecker was again sent out and the work lasted all Sunday. The wrecking outfit is still working at a late hour this afternoon, cleaning up the debris. Four cars were totally destroyed, while others were more or less damaged.

The wreckers state that even with daylight no one could tell whether there were one or two cars ruined, as all were so tightlly wedged together. The men counted the car wheels, and thus were able to tell.

The car on which Hedman was standing was filled with rosin, the car back of it was filled with pig iron, while the two other destroyed were filled with coal and lumber. The car of rosin being the lightest was destroyed in a twinkling, and the others lasted a little longer. The ease with which these cars broke in parts acted as a buffer, thus saving the others to a certain extent.

Superintendent Jones’ Statement.

F.M. Jones superintendent of this division of the Central when seen by a Messenger representative gave out a few statements concerning the accident as follows: “The accident occurred two and three quarters miles west of the city, and the train was in charge of Night Yardmaster Rhodes.”

He said the financial loss would probably be $1,200 or $1,500, that complete investigation had not been held and that until it was he would not be in a position to make any assertions concerning the cause of the wreck, or who was to blame.

When asked concerning the rules governing a case when a train breaks in two, he answered by showing the rule book. The rule says that the rear section shall be stopped and then remain stationary, but that the forward section shall run back, to the rear section, but shall be preceded by a flagman.

This rule, however, does not seem to govern the case, in that the men on the rear section did not know of the parting. when asked concerning this Mr. Jones replied that the rule should be followed. A very thor0ugh investigation will be held, and the responsibility places.

Further than this Mr. Jones said he could not say. He said that when the investigation was completed, the road might be willing to announce further particulars, but not as yet.

Fresh Vegetables on Local Market

New Products from Farm and Garden Tell of Advent of Spring.

Strawberries Now in Season

While There are Many Vegetables and Fruits to be Purchased.

There are quite a number of fruits and vegetables of spring in the market this week to tempt the pocketbook for the Sunday dinner.

Strawberries are quite plentiful this week and are of a good quality, selling at 30 cents per quart. The egg plant has also made it appearance a close follower of grape-fruit, cauliflower, tomatoes, aetc. (sic)

Some fresh ground horseradish, just out of the frozen ground is also on hand, a welcome and strong reminder that spring is here.

Eggs and butter are still about the same price, the former bringing fifteen cents per dozen and the latter twenty cents per pound.

Fruits are about the same as last week. Oranges, bananas and apples are on the market and some fine specimens of all three varieties are exhibited at the stores about town.

The new potato is daily expected from the south, along with new cabbages and other vegetables which are the usual arrivals this time of year.

In meats, there are all kinds of fresh fish and plenty of the fine fowls of all kinds on the market. Some particularly fine ducks appear at the various meat markets of the city this week.

The oyster is getting in his last work of the season, selling for forty cents per quart.

After the plain fare of the winter season, the fresh crisp things of spring are going like hot cakes before the onslaught of the afternoon marketers, but the supply is good, and Fort Dodge will have an opportunity to die (sic) high SSunday (sic).

Vic Dolliver Gaining Fame as Corn Husker

Proving to Washington Legislators the Falsity of Reports That he is Not an Iowa Farmer.

Victor Dolliver, during his stay in Washington is actively engaged in demonstrating the falsity of the reports which are being circulated derogatory to his fair reputation as a son of the soil. Frank J. Stillman, in one of his Washington letters has the following which will be of interest to Vic’s Fort Dodge friends:

Victor Dolliver in mingling with and engaging senators and officials in conversation, occasionally drops remarks indicating that he is a farmer and actively engaged in tilling the soil. Such remarks invariable (sic) call forth humorous observations and suggestions of incredulity. At this point Dolliver reaches into his h ip pocket and produces a regulation corn husker well worn and bright, and the Cincinnatus leaving his plow story fastened upon Victor by an Oregonian, has been succeeded by the corn-husking incident.

Part of Saturday, all day Sunday and continuing to some extent today green was in evidence everywhere in Fort Dodge. Every other man one passed on the street wore a shamrock in his lapel and with the female population strap bits of green were to be noticed in the wearing apparel. Every year new and novel devices suggestive of St. Patrick’s day, March 17, are blossoming out and each year more attention is paid to this Irish holiday. Besides the shamrocks there were little clay pipes tied with green ribbon, little harps and tall green little Irish hats.

What housewife has not on dozens of occasions had to content with the door bell nuisance? They are few, we will warrant. Oftentimes the busy housewife is called to the door ten times in a day by the ringing of the bell and in most of the instances only a circular has been left, a peddler wants to sell some knick-knack or a canvassing agent with his bland smile is found at the door. In connection with the cheaper grade of soliciting it has become a nuisance greatly in need of remedy and something to rid her forever from the harrassment (sic) of the pestiferous bell ringer is piteously prayed for by the average woman.

Chicken Thieves Make Raid

C.L. Peterson Suffers the Loss of Many Fowls

Resident in Southeastern Part of the City Loses Large Number of Chickens and Geese.

Chicken thieves made a raid on the chicken coop of C.L. Peterson, living near the Plymouth gypsum mill, on Thursday night, and today Mr. Peterson is mourning the loss of nearly three dozen choice fowls. chickens to the number of thirty or more were taken, while the thieves helped themselves to three fat geese in addition to the big Plymouth Rocks.

The theft was discovered at an early hour this morning, when Mr. Peterson found a glove in the yard near his chicken coop. Blood found near the building in which the fowls were housed led to an investigation and the discovery of the fact that he had been relieved of the greater part of his feathery wealth. The glove is the only clue to the identity of the thief, or thieves. No disturbance was heard Thursday night, although it is evident from the generous spilling of blood about the premises, that at least one chicken was killed.

Mr. Peterson is a foreman employed by the Plymouth Gypsum company, and lives near the mill in the southeastern part of the city.

Willey Takes His Departure

“Nutty” Willey Left Fort Dodge for all Time.

Does So When He is Threatened to Be Named as Candidate for the Cherokee Dry House.

Michael Conlin, Earnest Willey and William Kelso were arraigned in police court this morning on the charge of being drunk. The first two named were fined $1 and costs, while Kelso was taxed $5 and the trimmings. conlin is a track laying foreman and was employed by the Great Western in laying steel for the Omaha extension. He is deaf and for that reason had some difficulty in pleading guilty when arraigned this morning. His fine was suspended providing he would return to work.

Ernest Willey, who is better known as “Nutty” Willey, left the city hall this morning with the firm determination of never showing his face in Fort Dodge again. He made this prmise under threat of being sent to the dry hosue at Cherokee. Willey has been a well known character in Fort Dodge for a number of years  and has been arrested repeatedly for being drunk. He was given an hour to get out of town, together with the information that if he again came within the limits of the city he would be promptly arrested.

(Editor’s note: I’ll try to gather more articles about “Nutty” Willey. I can safely say that he did forget to stay away from Fort Dodge and in fact, returned on March 21, 1904. Also, at this time, the mental health facility in Cherokee apparently had a 1904 version of rehab. That was what Ernest Willey was trying to avoid by promising to leave Fort Dodge forever.)

John Doe and Richard Roe

Two Men Famous in Police Court come Up and Get All There is in Stock

Were a Very Jolly Pair

In Spite of the Fact That Their conditions and Surroundings Were Not The Brightest They Were Joyous And Showed Themselves Optomists.

John Doe and Richard Roe both arrived in the city at one and the same time a couple of days ago and since then have been having one of the best times of their lives. As a result of force of habit, however, these bad, bad men steered directly for one of the jag factories and had their measures taken for the two biggest jags that ever came out of the shop in this city. for two days them wore them quietly and had all kinds of sport, being successful in steering clear of blue coats and brass buttons and seeing the town on both the right and wrong sides in a most thorough manner.

Finally however, the inevitable happened, and the two naughty men fell into the hands of the cops and went down on the little report book with a big “drunk and disorderly” after each of their names. The arrest of the two took place last evening and in spite of the fact that they were dressed faultlessly, were consigned to the city bastile like any ordinary drunk.

This morning  in police court, in spite of the discolored taste that must have lingered in their mouths and the wheels that still turned and buzzed in their heads, they were in a very jocular mood and took the whole matter as a great joke. It was such a funny thing that they, of all people in the world should be hauled up before the police and fined. It was really too ridiculous for anything, and they coulnd’t get over laughing about it.

John was given a fine of five plunks and costs but Richard got off a little easier being assigned the usual one and trimmings. They came to Fort Dodge for a good time and they certainly had it, but had to pay the price.

This is the first case that has been up in police court for more than two weeks.

A Deadly Disease at Brushy

Anthrax Breaks Out Among Animals on Pratt Farm.

Is Contagious Disease Deadly to both Animals and Man – Place is Quarantined.

On being called to the farm of Charles Pratt at Brushy, Thursday afternoon by the news that a strange disease had broken out among the animals on the farm, Dr. Baughman of this city found the malady to be anthrax, a deadly contagious disease which attacks both animals and human beings. Already a number of animals have died from its effects.

Dr. Baughman, who is assistant state veterinarian took the case in hand at once and has imposed a strict quarantine n the place. All stock on the farm will be confined to it until it is certain that the disease has been stamped out. The sheds, pens, etc., will be torn down either placed in a strong antiseptic solution or burned and the dead animals will be burned in lime to prevent the disease germs from again coming to the surface.

The malady appeared on the same place some fifteen or sixteen years ago, and it is supposed that it reappeared through being brought to the surface by earth worms. It attacks those who are taken with it in the form of a malignant ulcer which spreads rapidly and soon brings death. There are practically no symptoms to give warning of the approach of the disease. The first that the farmer knows of it when he finds the dead animals which have succumbed to it.
